Science Patrol is just beginning to understand the origins and inner-workings of this amazing device; however, to attempt to explain something this magnificent and beautiful is to negate the very thing itself.

Back in the days of my hallucinogenic exploits, I went to the Pink Floyd Laser Spectacular. I was tripping, and the opening act was scenes from "Animusic", the CG instruments shown in this post. I was amazed, but I couldn't remember the name of the stuff (unsurprisingly), and it was nearly impossible to explain to someone. I had to search for some time before re-discovering them.
